English for 50+

This course is designed for students over the age of 50 who prefer to study and socialise with people of their own age. It is aimed at helping more mature participants to communicate freely in English, with emphasis on fluency and accuracy. Besides learning grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, learners are given ample opportunity to practise the spoken English language.

Classes are given in groups with an average of 6 students (maximum 12) and all levels are available, including complete beginners. The course also includes a varied programme of activities and excursions designed specifically for this age group.

English for 50+ General Programme

Week 1

  • Monday: Guided city tour (Company Gardens, slave museum, Bo-Kaap)
  • Tuesday: Free Net languages introduction
  • Wednesday: Visit to the Heart Transplant Museum
  • Thursday: Free Net languages
  • Friday: Evening visit to the Africa Cafe
  • Saturday: Guided day trip to Cape Point
  • Sunday: Free day

Week 2

  • Monday: Visit Table Mountain
  • Tuesday: Free Net languages
  • Wednesday: Volunteer experience
  • Thursday: Evening visit to the cinema
  • Friday: Art Jamming
  • Saturday: Guided winelands tour
  • Sunday: Free day

English for 50+ Creative Art Programme

This course combines an English course for students over 50 with a series of 4 short introductory workshops on painting ceramics, glass-fusing, pottery and sculpture. All materials are provided and students will be welcome to take home any work they produce. For more information about the Creative Art Workshops see below:

Week 1

The English for 50+ programme consist of:

  • 20 group English lessons per week
  • Maximum group size of 12 students
  • All teaching materials, tests and certificates.
  • Accommodation (as requested) with either a host family, in a student residence or lodge/hotel.
  • Half or full board as requested
  • Airport transfer service on arrival and departure.
  • 3 x ½ Day/Evening excursions and 1 x Full Day excursion with a teacher per week
