Time flies! I am already two months in Cape Town and it seems like a really long time, but if you count how many burgers I ate in these months, you will think I have lived my whole life here. I literally lived on burgers during my first week in Cape Town. Wasn’t it a beef burger with cheese, then was it a chicken burger with avocado. I have to admit that my jeans feel a bit tighter, but it was all worth it. Vegetarians also have plenty of choices in Cape Town, because most of the burger spots have vegetarian burgers which are tasting really good.

I have put my 5 best burger places in and around Cape Town together in a overview!

The JC Brasserie & Pub

How cool is it if you just can create your own burger. No pickles you do not like and no salad as a side dish when you actually want sweet potato fries. The whole burger is in your hands. They offer the choice to choose your own hamburger, such as beef, ostrich and vegetarian. You can choose your own toppings and sauce on it, and you have the opportunity to choose your own side dish. Some more good news: the burgers are 50% off on Tuesdays! And they even taste as good as always. My favorite: the vegetarian burger with avocado and sweet potato fries. Also nice to know is that they always show live sports on tv and offer live entertainment during the week.

Hudsons The Burger Joint

The Rockabilly, which includes pepper crusted beef patty topped with chorizo, jalapeño & dusted onion rings; The La DI Dah, a ostrich patty topped with caramelised onion, blue cheese, avo & biltong shavings; The bacon jam, an beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce, bacon jam & dusted onions. Do I have to say more? And there are around 10 more burgers you can choose! And, to cite Hudsons, er, site again, “if you do not eat beef, you can still eat a burger”. They offer delicious vegetarian options, such as chickpea and lentil burger. Besides the burgers, they have more than 20 beers and a lot of delicious cocktails. Try the Moijto or Strawberry Daiquiri one time!

Craft Burger Bar

At the cozy restaurant located in Sea Point and Heritage Square, you’re able to create your own burger by selecting from a list of options in terms of patty, bun, toppings, cheeses, sauces and sides. How about beef with tomato, sautéed onions, bacon and mushroom sauce? Isn’t that great! The café is very close to IH Cape Town and as a IH student you will also get discount on your burger. But if you have a lazy day, you can also order your burger online. This bar is really worth a try!

Rick’s Cafe Americain

The Casablanca-themed restaurant, perfect located in Kloof Street, offers you a menu with a seasonal selection of tapas, steaks, seafood and last but not least: gourmet burgers. I can really recommend the chermoula chicken burger with mint yoghurt, avocado, mushrooms, tomatoes and a basket of chips. Who else can resist the 45 cocktails and beers discounted during the happy hour? If you are in for a private party, Rick’s Cafe is the perfect place for it. And with the cool rooftop deck, cocktails can be drunk during the warmer months, or you can just relax near to the outside heaters when the weather is chilly.

IYO Burgers

”Inside & You’re Out is Cape Towns’ premier burger shop with a difference. We do inside out burgers.” – Jonah Lewis and Jean Marc Lenferna, the owners of IYO Burgers. Inside out burgers is their specialty: each patty is filled with cheese and other gourmet ingredients. The goodness inside the patty is only the start. The focus is on reducing environmental impact and using ethical products where ever they can. ”What makes our burgers so good on the inside is what we’ve put in from the outside.” How does the Bree Street Burger sound: an ostrich patty topped with pickled red onion, wild rocket, asian mayo and a red wine cranberry reduction.
