On 11 June 2009, Cape Town officially started the 1 year countdown to the opening on the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
This was marked by a day filled with fun activities including a symbolic football kick-off on Table Mountain.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be held in 9 cities across South Africa from 11 June 2010 to 11 July 2010.
There will be an estimated audience of approximately 6 billion people viewing every game from around the world.
South Africa is experienced in hosting major national and international sporting events including:

• 1996 Africa Cup of Nations
• 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup

Stadium Construction:
The Green Point stadium has been torn down and rebuilt in accordance with FIFA™ standards and will serve as the venue for the semi-final
The Green Point stadium Visitors Centre is the focal point of the FIFA 2010 World Cup experience in the Western Cape. It aims to inform and inspire visitors and soccer lovers about the progress in the stadium’s construction as well as build enthusiasm about being a host city.
The Visitors Centre features a viewing platform overlooking the new stadium, soccer-themed photographic exhibitions, architectural model of the new stadium and a theatrical performance, The Greensman – a one man informative show blending myth legend and historical fact about Green Point Common.
2010 FIFA WORLD CUP OFFICIAL MASCOT:
ZAKUMI
Born on 16 June 1994 on National Youth Day and in the year that South Africa gained democratic independence, this day falls on the anniversary of the Soweto Uprising when, in 1976 thousands of school children in Soweto took to the streets in protest against the repressive apartheid policies.
His name – ZAKUMI – derived from “ZA” the Afrikaans abbreviation for Zuid Afrika and “KUMI” which means “10” in many African languages.
His colors, Green and Gold, match the colors of all South Africa’s sporting kits and the official colors of the South African National Football Kit.
