What is the Demi Pair/Volunteer Programme?

A Demi Pair is a part time student and part time Au Pair. The Demi Pair programme was created to give people from around the world the opportunity to study, perfect their English skills and volunteer in Cape Town, South Africa. Whether you are a student seeking for the opportunity to live with a South African family or an Au Pair seeking to enhance your educational background, this program is the perfect money saving solution.

Demi Pair placements are available for applicants at intermediate level or higher, and must have some child care experience. International House Cape Town in conjunction with Assex (Ambassadors of Study and Skills Exchange) will help students to obtain the necessary Visa to study and volunteer in Cape Town before being placed with a family that is carefully chosen by our International House Coordinator, Sabine who is responsible for the Demi Pair Programme and has 8 years of child care experience.

The minimum stay with a family is 3 months and the maximum stay is 6 months.

Be part of a local South Africa family, exchanging 20 hours of child-minding and housework for free accommodation and meals. During your stay in Cape Town, you will be doing a Standard English course (20 lessons per week) in the mornings and help the family with the children and light household chores in the afternoons/evenings.

Being a Demi Pair allows you to volunteer and study in an English-speaking environment, developing your English language and learning the culture and lifestyle of a South African family.
