THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE CELTA

This course provides initial training and a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). It is intended for those without previous experience who wish to enter the profession and for teachers with no previous training in this field. Success in the Certificate has enabled many candidates to obtain their first teaching position: the course is highly regarded internationally by employers as providing sound initial training and a strong basis from which to develop as a teacher of English.

WHY THIS TRAINING COURSE?

  • Probably the most internationally recognized certificate for teaching EFL/ESL in the world.
  • Highly qualified and experienced trainers.
  • Extensive supervised teaching practice.
  • Practical approach to methodology.
  • Personalized individual tutorials.
  • Expert careers advice and access to the IH World Network of 140+ schools.
  • Moderated by the University of Cambridge ESOL Teaching Awards

COURSE CONTENT

  • Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context.
  • Language analysis and awareness.
  • Language skills:  reading, listening, speaking and writing.
  • Planning and resources.
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism.
  • Classroom observation.
  • Teaching practice.

TEACHING PRACTICE

Teaching practice (TP) is an integral part of the course, and is what differentiates a good training course from an inferior one. TP with real students provides the experiential learning which is so essential to good training.

ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATES

Trainees are continuously assessed in all the syllabus areas, particular emphasis on their teaching ability. At the end of the course, successful candidates receive the Cambridge Certificate and an International House Progress Report.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must be at least 20 years old at the start of the course. They must have a standard of education which would allow entrance to higher education in their country. They must have awareness of language, and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course. They must also have the potential to develop into effective teachers.

COURSE DESIGN

Full-time over four weeks.

Courses have a minimum of 120 contact hours, plus a further 80+ hours required for outside of classtime tasks, including assignments and lesson planning. This course is very intensive and requires a full-time commitment. It is not possible or advisable to hold even a part-time job while on the course.

WHY INTERNATIONAL HOUSE CAPE TOWN?

  • For the first time, International House Cape Town will be running CELTA courses in conjunction with International House Barcelona. Both centres are affiliated to the London-based International House World Organisation, the largest -  and widely regarded as the best  -  independent language teaching and teacher training organisation in the world.
  • The original four-week preparatory course was created by International House in 1963 and evolved over the years into the present-day Cambridge CELTA.
  • IH Barcelona has been training teachers of English since 1974. They have an international reputation for excellence and are now one of the largest ELT training centres in Europe.
  • Teaching practice groups are limited to 5 or 6 trainee teachers, which means you receive more attention! Courses are in multiples of 5 or 6 trainee teachers (10, 12, 15, or 18 maximum).
  • Careers advice and professional development are part of the course, with help on writing CVs, finding and applying for jobs, and an update on job availability in IH and non-IH schools around the world.
  • Free Internet access to online materials provided by International House World, including general English and teacher training modules.
  • Comments from past trainees emphasise that the course is worthwhile, stimulating, challenging, rewarding, and, generally, excellent. Here are just a few:

“I wish I’d taken this course sooner!! I had no idea it would be as good as it was. I would definitely recommend it and I’d like to say THANKS!”

“Overall excellent course that exceeded my expectations both in terms of its professional utility and its personal enjoyment.”

“An excellent, well-organised, interesting, confidence-building and fun course.”
