Cape Town Voted Favourite City in the World

The UK’s Daily and Sun Telegraph newspapers have released the results of their annual reader travel survey and Cape Town has emerged as their readers’ Favourite World City. Cape Town pipped San Francisco, Sydney and Vancouver for best city, whilst South Africa was in the top four for best destination on earth.

The survey also revealed some refreshing news about their UK readers’ attitudes to travel. Of the 25 000 readers polled, 92% were adamant that the credit crunch would have no effect on their choice of destination, whilst 96% said they refused to downgrade their accommodation this holiday.

Reader choices indicate an overall preference for destinations where the pound had strength against the destination currency. 50% of the readers spent more than £ 1000 on their last holiday, with one in six spending £ 2500 – £ 5000 and one in twenty spending over £ 5 000.

Common to all readers was a need to know that they were receiving value for money. South Africa was recently voted in the Top Ten as a value-for-money destination in The Country Brands Index 2008.

The need for assured value also meant that many readers were likely to return to destinations they already know, good news for Cape Town; a long-time favourite with British visitors.

“We are thrilled with the news,” says Cape Town Tourism, CEO, Mariëtte du-Toit Helmbold, “Cape Town is well placed to receive visitors looking for value for money and an authentic experience. Cape Town has so much to offer that visitors generally end up coming back to see and do more. We look forward to welcoming these visitors this summer.”

The survey also revealed that many would-be travelers are increasingly gathering information and booking online, although some still preferred to deal with booking agents face-to-face.
